Oguta Gas Plant - Gas Vent Spill
This site was impacted following crude carry over to the cold vent from gas plant at Oguta on 24th February, 2010. The impacted area was approx. 5,000m2. Contamination was limited to the surface at 0.3metres depth.
The remediation project lasted for 2 months without LTI. Approximately 1,500m3 of contaminated soil was remediated insitu. Choice of remediation technique was site specific and risk based in line with Risk Based Remediation Management System.
Remediation by Enhanced Natural Attenuation (RENA) was deployed for the site based on the following considerations:
- It is one of the techniques recognized and approved by regulators.
- More sustainable in terms of lower carbon emissions than other alternatives.
- Presents less health and safety risk as soils are treated on site without need for haulage.
- It is cost effective and generates short term employment for community youths.
Work Process
- Soil sampling and site preparation.
- Initial tilling.
- Excavation of heavily impacted soil which was moved to lightly impacted area for land farming & bulking.
- Application of nutrient amendment.
- Windrows construction, breakdown and homogenisation.
- Incorporation and homogenization of the ash from controlled burning of solid waste into the treatment area.
- QA/QC monitoring.
