Biara Remediation Spill
Biara remediation spill site is along 24”/28” Nkpoku to Bomu Manifold trunk lines. The site has experienced multiple spill incidents between 2008 and 2011.
Following detailed site assessment, it was indicated that an area of 75,000m2 required remediation work to depth ranging from 1m to 6m.
The initial TPH value ranged from 6,245mg/kg-27,616mg/kg and the post remediation values were in the range of 1000 mg/kg to 4000 mg/kg. about 3,628bbls have were reported spilled at Biara site with the said period.
Remediation Technique
Bioremediation was adopted at the site. Integrated use of bioremediation and land farming techniques. The process involves the systematic degradation of the hydrocarbon compounds under suitable bio-physic-chemical conditions
Atmospheric aeration is enhanced by tilling. The Bioremediation also involves application of biochemical nutrient amendment and maintenance of appropriate moisture content in the soil. The ultimate end result is production of carbon dioxide and water.
Deeply impacted soil was excavated for on-site ex-situ treatment using caterpillar excavators and swamp buggy.
About 210 barrels of free phase soil was recovered by skimming from the shallow ground water after which the water was treated with application bio-nutrient amendments.
